What to Wear: Fashion and Dress in Religious Prints

Auguste-Louis Lepère (French, 1849–1918)

"What to Wear: Fashion and Dress in Religious Prints," highlights costume and clothing as featured in original art from the 16th–20th centuries. Clothing, accessories and accoutrements can provide important visual cues for reading images. Oftentimes, the way a figure is dressed allows the viewer to identify their occupation or social status, and can even convey implications about the person’s virtuosity.

Whether it’s a queen’s tiara, soldiers’ weaponry or priestly robes, these details contribute significantly to the way we view and perceive the figures who wear them. From historic and traditional garments to exotic and fantastical costume, this exhibition begs the question: "What to Wear?"
